It must have well-defined boundaries and an adequate expansion to enable an effective economic development of the area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5250-0-1-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_media_image\" data-index=\"2\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geoparcoalpicarniche.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/SK-828web.jpg\" class=\"image wp-image-8067  attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geoparcoalpicarniche.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/SK-828web.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.geoparcoalpicarniche.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/SK-828web-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geoparcoalpicarniche.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/SK-828web-768x305.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.geoparcoalpicarniche.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/SK-828web-1024x406.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/div><div id=\"panel-5250-0-1-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-5250-0-1-2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>The 1972 UNESCO Convention<\/h3>\n<p>In Art. 2 of the 1972 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, dedicated to the definition of \u201ccultural heritage\u201d, it cited \u201cthe natural monuments consisting of physical formations or of groups of such formations, geological and physiographic formations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following decades, several international protection programmes, documents and guidelines (the classification drawn up in 1994 by the World Conservation Union, the UNESCO Man and Biosphere \u2013 MAB programme as well as many others) foresee measures aimed at preserving territories that also represent important sites from a geological point of view.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5250-0-1-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"4\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>The GEOPARKS programme<\/h3>\n<p>Following the launch of the GEOPARKS programme carried out by UNESCO in 1998, in 2000, the first Geoparks in Europe were effectively activated. In fact, the <strong>European Geoparks Network<\/strong> consists of four protected areas in 4 different countries: The Petrified Forest on the Island of Lesbos in Greece, the Haute-Provence Geological Reserve in France, the Vulkaneifel Geopark in \u00a0\u00a0Germany and the Maestrazgo Cultural Park in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Several initiatives have originated from the collaboration between these 4 Geoparks: ranging between the <strong>promotion of geotourism<\/strong> to environmental education in the geological sector, from professional training to scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the European Network consists of 69 Geoparks in 23 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in 2004, under the aegis of UNESCO, the <strong>Global Geoparks Network<\/strong> was established.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5250-0-1-4\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_siteorigin-panels-builder\" data-index=\"5\" ><div id=\"pl-w5af0070b6e4ce\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-w5af0070b6e4ce-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h4 class=\"mb\">Italian legislation<\/h4>\n<p class=\"testo12\">Italian legislation does not provide a precise definition of what a Geopark is: therefore, on a national level, reference is generally made to the indications given by the European Geoparks Network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"testo12\">In 2016 The <strong>Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia<\/strong> issued Regional Law n. 16 containing <strong><em>\u201cProvisions for the preservation and enhancement of geodiversities, geological and speleological heritage and Karst areas\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>that, among its other objectives, also includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n \t<li><p class=\"testo12\">The acknowledgement of the public interest in the preservation and enhancement of regional geological and speleological heritage<\/p><\/li>\n \t<li><p class=\"testo12\">The establishment and updating of the regional registry of regional Geosites and Geoparks<\/p><\/li>\n \t<li><p class=\"testo12\">The promotion of the dissemination and public use compatible with the preservation of the heritage asset as well as the educational and tourist use of the locations of geological and speleological interest.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-w5af0070b6e4ce-0-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h4 class=\"mb\"><strong>Legislation in Austria<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"testo12\">Austrian legislation, in turn, has not yet acknowledged the indications of the European Union by means of a law that defines geoparks;
