area of \u200b\u200bthe Geopark are rich in significant fossil evidence that can take us on a journey covering almost 500 million years, starting at the beginning of the Palaeozoic era, a unique situation in&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;and one which probably has no equal in&nbsp;Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5174-0-1-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"mb panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-5174-0-1-1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>This enormous wealth is linked to the widespread presence in this area of rocks, sedimentary in origin, that have allowed us to track organisms that lived in the past. In fact, it is in sedimentation environments that most fossils are formed and preserved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5174-0-1-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2><strong>What is a fossil?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fossils represent significant evidence of the past<\/strong>. They include not only the parts of the organisms (bones, shells, armour, leaves, etc.) but also the signs of their activity (prints, tracks, and nest sites) and their feeding (fossil pellets and excrement - so-called \u201ccoprolites\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5174-0-1-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_siteorigin-panels-builder\" data-index=\"4\" ><div id=\"pl-w5ea17903ec48c\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-w5ea17903ec48c-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"mt panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-w5ea17903ec48c-0\" ><div id=\"pgc-w5ea17903ec48c-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w5ea17903ec48c-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>In some cases the fossilization process does not affect a living organism but an environment. After death, an organism is buried by sediment and incorporated into what will eventually become a sedimentary rock. During this long process the animal loses its soft parts (lost, eaten by necrophagous organisms or destroyed by the processes of decomposition) while the hard parts (bones, shell, teeth, armour) may retain their original composition or may be substituted by various minerals without losing the original \u201cform\u201d.
